The Tampa Bay Center for Community Transformation
Transform Tampa Bay
Participatory Defense is a grassroots movement that empowers the key stakeholder – people who face criminal charges, their families, and their communities to become change agents who work for greater transparency, accountability, and fairness from the criminal justice system.
Participatory Defense meetings are held in communities to allow defendants, their families and their communities the opportunity to intervene in the court process and allow for individual case work to serve as a catalyst for policy changes by giving those most directly impacted by the court system the tools necessary to fight for their freedom. The program has been in effect in San Jose for six years and is currently expanding to six cities as part of a pilot program. Those cities include Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Birmingham, St. Louis, Los Angeles, and Lexington.
